Decision aid: themes within the programme

Every year we are happy to look for the best (inter)national performances to present to you. We do not program within a predetermined theme. However, for a number of years now, there has been a secret thread running through our programming: the search for what it means to be human, and how we relate to each other and the world around us. To make it a little easier for you to make a choice from the large and diverse programme, we will highlight three different themes this year.

We, the people

On democracy, power, representation, and collective responsibility

Stories don't just happen: they're chosen, preserved, passed on, and sometimes (deliberately) forgotten. Who gets the space to be heard? And who decides which stories are good enough to pass on? From war and history to identity and representation: this programme line explores democracy in the broadest sense of the word.

On history, the future, climate, and the systems that shape our lives

What do we pass on, what do we leave behind, and what world are we building together? Artists and scientists look at the major shifts of our time: from climate and technology to ageing, memory, and the systems that shape our everyday lives. Stories and conversations about what disappears, what stays, and what has yet to emerge.

Who owns the city

On public space, ownership, encounter, and how we create space together

A city is never finished. It changes through the people who live in it, move through it, protest, play, and meet one another. In this programme line, we look at public space as a place of both struggle and connection: who gets to be there, who sets the rules, and how do we create space together for new ideas?
