Light for the city

In our little light tent, you’ll get to work with rice paper and rattan to create a beautiful light sculpture. Perfect for your room, the garden, or as a special gift. Didn’t finish it in time? No worries! You’ll take everything home with you – including a QR code linking to an instruction video.

And the best part? On November 8th, you can join the Sunnemeerten Parade with your very own lamp – a magical lantern walk through Groningen, created by and for the people of Groningen. A new tradition full of light and connection. Are you in? We’ll see you in the light tent!

You can join this activity by purchasing tokens, available only during the festival on the Speelweide. 1 token costs €4. A bundle of 3 tokens costs €10.

About the artist

On November 8th, a magical light parade will wind its way through the heart of Groningen: the Sunnemeerten Parade. Large and small light sculptures made from willow branches, rattan, and rice paper will shine as they move through the streets. These glowing creations are made by the people of Groningen themselves in special community workshops. Inspired by the Saint Martin Parade in Utrecht, the Sunnemeerten Parade aims to bring together as many Groningers as possible in a captivating shared experience. It marks the beginning of a new tradition in the city – a unifying light festival celebrating the feast of Saint Martin. Created by and for the people of Groningen.
