After his great success at Noorderzon 2019 with Screws, ex-circus artist Alexander Vantournhout returns with another wonderful gravity-defying choreography. With both body and hammer, this delicate one-man army softens all stereotypes surrounding male strength.

A thunder-like dance solo

Whether you've just seen him as a superhero in the latest Marvel movies, or know a thing or two about Nordic gods, Thor is perhaps the most famous personification of masculine power we know. From ancient gods such as Thor, to ancient heroes, soldiers or athletes: masculine strength often equated with aggression, violence and even war.

In VanThorhout, choreographer and former circus artist Alexander VanThournhout rigorously rejects these stereotypes. He appears on stage as the thunder god, and gets to work with his own Mjölnir (hammer). But he is vulnerable, delicate and elegant while doing it. As always with Alexander's work, the relationship between object and performer quickly becomes unclear. When does he lose power over the heavy hammer and when does the hammer take control? You saw Alexander Vantournhout in 2019 with the acclaimed Screws at Noorderzon and this year he is back, again with a fantastic choreography that continues to defy gravity.

About the artist

Alexander Vantournhout is back at Noorderzon, but this time he is on stage himself with a solo performance. He studied in Brussels at the ESAC (Ecole Supérieure des Arts du Cirque), where he learned juggling and acrobatics, before switching to dance. His current work is influenced by dance, martial arts, circus and yoga. His success has taken him to places all over the world, such as Oerol, Cinedans and the Theater Festival.
