Traditional Japanese puppetry re-imagined for modern minds

On Sado Island, off the coast of Japan, Hachirobe Nishihashi, a master puppeteer from the Bunya-Puppet theatre has been practicing his art for many decades. Dressed in black, fully masked and invisible, he has spent a lifetime manipulating life-size Bunraku puppets. The Bunraku form was originally developed as a place to discuss love affairs and scandals: puppets can change gender, become ghosts, can love, can die and come back to life again.

About the artist

Amsterdam-based Interdisciplinary artist Tomoko Mukaiyama is back again on Noorderzon after many successful performances in the past, like HOME (2016). She was the first Japanese pianist to have ever won the prestigious Dutch Gaudeamus competition, and her success has since brought her all over the globe, working with world-famous orchestras and ensembles. She pushes to the edges of classical music and challenges convention with her fascination for contemporary art throughout her work, all with femininity at the heart of what she does.
