On Sado Island, off the coast of Japan, Hachirobe Nishihashi, a master puppeteer from the Bunya-Puppet theatre has been practicing his art for many decades. Dressed in black, fully masked and invisible, he has spent a lifetime manipulating life-size Bunraku puppets. The Bunraku form was originally developed as a place to discuss love affairs and scandals: puppets can change gender, become ghosts, can love, can die and come back to life again.
In this magnificent world premiere on Noorderzon, the Amsterdam-based musician and director Tomoko Mukaiyama has been inspired to give a new and more modern form to the tradition through adding in anime inspired digitally re-composed imagery, and bold new forms of acting for the puppeteer and puppets. By combining the ancient art of Joruri puppetry with modern electronic music and manga expression, SADO fearlessly blends reality and fantasy, and takes us deep into the most compelling expressions of both modern Japan and traditions as old as time.
With after-talk on August 21st at 7:30PM.
