Redemption but at what price?

JaWa is a quite simple story of a social enterprise called JaWa, established in September 2021 next to the place where the two artists Turkowski & Nowacka live and work. The story will be told from their perspective, but the two core workers of JaWa were Jan and Waldemar (and the name of the enterprise comes directly from their first names), who found this job after several hard chapters in their lives. It’s a documentation of 18 months working together, especially two challenging „business trips“ to Warsaw, after an invitation to be part of the theatre season „Tough Love“ at Komuna Warszawa. „It becomes a moving story about dignity, freedom, wealth and poverty, friendship and addiction.

A performance like JaWa redefines theatre, it becomes a testimony of something that is definitely bigger than an evening at a theatre. (...) This project is a story about humanity in all its complexity and ambiguity.

About the artist

Janek Turkowski is a much-loved guest on Noorderzon, with performances such as Margarete (2012) and Smalfilm (2013). Since 2013 he works together with Iwona Nowacka, and they continue as a duo Turkowski & Nowacka. They are known for their detailed and multi-layered work, always with slice-of-life film recordings at the heart of the work.
