CANCELED | Natalie Bergman

Concert at Apollo

One voice, goosebumps-triggering harmonies based on gospel music. Natalie’s songs tell a personal story. Yet, though they are based on Christian gospel music, they have nothing to do with religion.

Gospel music as you know it, but in a new jacket

“It all seems to be a little carefree, casual and at times pleasantly psychedelic. Music to get high by, only not like you’re used to,” OOR summed up her solo debut Mercy on Jack White’s label. You might remember the American singer Nathalie Bergman from the duo Wild Belle, which she founded with her brother Elliott. On her own, Bergman adds a brilliant layer of soul, pop and psychedelic rock to traditional gospel. With a playful voice, she sings about typical heavy gospel themes, thus letting the songs themselves sound quite light-hearted. Like no other, she manages to transform the traditional sound into something you’ve never heard before. Goosebumps-triggering harmonies, refreshing new impulses and an enchanting voice – the perfect soundtrack for this last Sunday afternoon at Noorderzon.

Unfortunately, Natalie had to cancel. Anna B Savage is her replacement.

Bergman's compelling collection is a sincere and astute attempt to transcend tragedy and loss - to fill the void with the only force powerful enough to do so: love.
