A true guitar legend, who played in Captain Beefheart and collaborated with none less than Jeff Buckley, Leonard Bernstein, Lou Reed, Patti Smith, Bryan Ferry, Nick Cave and many more. At Noorderzon, Grammy-nominated songwriter and composer Gary Lucas accompanies a screening of the silent comedy Too Much Johnson (an – until 2008 believed lost – film by the great film director Orson Welles) with an original psychedelic solo guitar live score.
Welles’ early brilliant slapstick farce – already featuring his legendary signature visual magic – was once shot as part of a play he directed only two years before he left for Hollywood to shake the (film) world to its foundations with Citizen Kane. A pioneer of the genre of live-scoring, Lucas brings Welles' Too Much Johnson into our festival for the European premiere of his live score.
