Spoken Word x Bitterzoet Heritage
Sunday 21 August, 3:00 PM

How was Groningen involved in slavery? What traces of the slavery past do you see? What effects are visible in society to this day?

In the context of the cultural manifestation Bitterzoet Erfgoed, traces of the slavery past are highlighted by a group of talented spoken word artists. A touching performance in which word artists bring the local history to light by means of moving texts. The various Groningen artists reflect on the slavery past of Groningen, the Netherlands and the rest of the world, as well as its impact on the present. The poets articulate their own place in society, within the context of culture and environment. Under the creative direction of Cissy Joan, the group of North State artists put on a show full of passion, emotion and imagination.

The artists who will perform are Tammy Blue, Juku, Emma Charlot, Vinny Johnson, Mirries, Sacha Landkroon and Cissy Joan. Check this website for more information.

Juersson Aldaïr Hermanus - Yu di Kòrsou' (Child of Curaçao)
Sunday 21 August, 4:30 PM

A dance performance in which Juersson goes in search of what he needs to establish a connection between his roots and his identity as a person. As a maker, he focuses on his Curaçao roots and starts his research with a focus on tambú, part of his Curaçao and Bonaire identity, which he incorporates into his hip-hop dance background. The Curaçao tambú originated in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries from various West African music styles, dances and rituals. Came along with the Africans who were enslaved and taken to America. This mixture of African influences changes over time and continues to adapt to local conditions. African elements such as repetition, rhythm, certain percussion instruments and improvisation remain clearly recognizable in the Curaçao tambú. The use spread from Curaçao to Aruba and Bonaire. During a number of interviews with his family and community, he discovers how many similarities there are between his identity, Africa, Tambú and hip-hop. Using findings from his research, he asks himself how do I choose who I want to be? Check this website for more information.

capital letterF - that I resemble peat
Sunday August 21, 19:00

that I resemble peat is a musical spoken word performance. Sound and text come together in this earthy, mysterious and dark monologue. Growing up in Drenthe is viewed in collage form from three different perspectives: that of the girl (the writer), that of the corpse (Yde's girl) and that of the peat (history). These different perspectives are shaped with the help of spherical sounds. The electronic music, which hovers somewhere between hip-hop and soundscape, provides the vulnerable part of the performance with a rough edge. Sound supports text and text supports sound. Maya Maria & Brandon McKinney - The Chaos of Becoming
Monday, August 22, 7:00 PM

In the not-too-distant future, a lone traveler crashes down from heaven to Earth. Alone she tries to move in this strange, unknown world full of danger, darkness and chaos. The traveler seeks answers, not only to questions about her new home, but also about herself; Where does she come from? Who is she?

“The Chaos of Becoming” tells the story of an individual's journey in a search for her self-esteem and identity. The challenging experience of getting acquainted with a world full of problems and worries; the euphoria of finding love and security in a partner; and the eye-opening experience that comes with confronting and accepting the darker parts of one's being - often referred to as 'the shadow' - and integrating them into the conscious self.
