A homage to yourself

The French philosopher and poet Jean Baudrillard wrote: “We live in an era of things. I mean we live to adapt their rhythm and ever-changing reality. In all the previous civilizations, what survived after generations was things—long-lasting tools or buildings; today, however, we and our bodies witness the generation, perfection and extinction of things. “Hommage”, which premiered in Shanghai in February 2023, seeks to re-interpret and re-examine the words of Baudrillard in the context of the increasing cultural integration of the post-globalized world and its consequences and impact upon human bodies. Theatre director and choreographer Yang Zhen creates a strongly aesthetic core language referencing Chinese bodies and Chinese fashion to focus in on both individual and collective landscapes and gender and appearance, using a multi-disciplinary approach in order to explore differing social contexts and concepts around beauty, with playful referencing of words and works from Oscar Wilde, Aldous Huxley and Yevgeny Zamyatin.
